The swing bed program allows patients to remain in the hospital after discharge to enhance their recovery and rebuild strength. 24 hour care is provided by skilled and caring nurses and therapists. The hospital provides a better nurse to patient ratio than a typical nursing home or larger medical center.
Swing Bed patients generally consist of the following: Post Hip and Knee Surgery Recovery and Rehabilitation, Post Cerebral Vascular Incident Recovery and Rehabilitation, IV Antibiotic Therapy, Extended Wound Care Therapy, Post Feeding Tube Insertion Care, Post Acute Pre Nursing Home Placement (if requirements for admission are met), and General Rehabilitation after Sickness (if requirements for admission are met).

Our hospital has a full service laboratory that is directed by a clinical pathologist from Pathologists Diagnostic Laboratory in Winston-Salem, N.C.
The laboratory is staffed by board certified medical technologists that have extensive experience in all areas of the lab and is accredited by COLA. Tests are performed in chemistry, hematology, serology, urinalysis and blood bank. Reference testing is performed by Laboratory Corporation of America (Lab Corp). Pathology and cytology testing is performed by Pathologists Diagnostic Laboratory.
Patients can come to the laboratory for any Physician ordered test and be confident that results will be relayed to their physician in an efficient and timely manner.
The laboratory is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 am till 5:00 pm for outpatients. No appointments are needed.

The primary goal of Pulmonary Rehabilitation is to help people with chronic lung disease improve their daily lives and improve or restore the ability to function independently.Anyone who has a symptomatic chronic lung disease and has difficulty completing daily activities will benefit from pulmonary rehabilitation.Patients with the following chronic lung diseases have shown to benefit from pulmonary rehabilitation:
- COPD (emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and asthma)
- Interstitial Lung Disease
- Cystic Fibrosis
- Bronchitis
- Thoracic cage deformities
- Neuromuscular disorders

Physical & Occupational Therapy
We provide outpatient physical therapy to the adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations for treatment of orthopedic and neurological impairments. Emphasis is placed on full functional recovery of our patients, so they may return to their previous occupational, recreational, and family activities. Our main goal is to serve the community with the most comprehensive, cost-effective, individualized care to foster a healthy and productive lifestyle.
In addition to outpatient services, physical therapy/occupational therapy is offered to patients within Pioneer Community Hospital of Stokes including: Acute, Swing bed inpatients, and Skilled Nursing. Treatment consists of therapeutic exercise, therapeutic activities, massage, neurological re-Education, self-care training and gait training.

Pioneer Community Hospital of Stokes offers quality adult and geriatric behavioral health services through the Structured Outpatient Program (SOP). Opportunities for positive growth and change are enhanced by our peaceful hilltop location, surrounded by views of the Stokes County mountains.
Our SOP program is designed to provide assistance to individuals over 40 who may be suffering from behavioral health problems, such as depression and anxiety. We offer group therapy, health education and leisure activities. Individual and family counseling is also available. Our program is staffed with a Registered Nurse, Licensed Certified Social Worker and an Activities Director.

- Individualized treatment planning for your specific needs
- Patient/family education about psychiatric symptoms
- Individual and/or family therapy as needed
- Relapse prevention planning
- Discharge planning
- Referral to area support groups/community resources
Referrals are accepted from all local physicians, county/community agencies, assisted living facilities, skilled nursing facilities, group homes, area hospitals, and self referrals. Pioneer Community Hospital of Stokes offers a 40 bed Skilled Nursing Facility which encourages the highest level of independence for all residents. The Skilled Nursing Facility offers in house physical therapy, occupational therapy and restorative programs for mobility, feeding, bladder and bowel continence.
Our highly skilled physician staff, nursing staff and interdisciplinary team work well together to provide quality care for all residents keeping in mind all aspects of the individual's life. Our admitting physicians to the skilled nursing facility include Dr. Samuel Newsome and Dr. David Kaplan. Families and residents are encouraged to participate in our team conferences. Dental services to our residents are provided by Dr. William Milner, DDS with Access Dental Care.
Services for our residents include free laundry and free beauty shop services for shampoos, cut and set with a minimal charge for permanents.
We have a very busy Activities Department offering crafts, movies, bingo, Red Hat Club and monthly outings. Various religious services are provided weekly.
Holidays and special events like birthdays and anniversaries take on special meaning for all our residents and their families. Activities are planned which include everyone that helps make our facility a friendly environment for our residents. Newsletters mailed to the families help keep them informed of the activities planned each month.
